Agrivoltaics is the planned use of the same parcel of land for agriculture and solar photovoltaic generation. Unlike a conventional ground-mounted solar farm that largely displaces cultivation, it treats sunlight and land as shared resources through dual land use. The system is designed to preserve viable farming while producing electricity.

How simultaneous production is achieved

Solar modules are arranged so that crops continue receiving sufficient sunlight and farm operations can proceed around them.

  • Elevated solar panels permit crops, workers, livestock and suitable machinery to occupy the space below.
  • Adequate row spacing, panel height and orientation allow light to reach crops and provide access for sowing, irrigation and harvesting.
  • Fixed or tracking systems can distribute sunlight and shade differently across the day, while photovoltaic cells convert the intercepted radiation into electricity.

Interaction between panels and crops

The arrangement creates a managed farm-energy microclimate rather than separating the two activities.

  • Partial shade can reduce excessive heat, soil-moisture loss and crop evapotranspiration in hot or dry conditions.
  • Vegetation beneath and between panels maintains agricultural output, while the panels generate renewable electricity from the same land footprint.
  • Panel runoff can be captured for irrigation, but drainage must be designed to prevent erosion or uneven water distribution.
  • Combining outputs can improve land-use efficiency, although neither crop yield nor power output is automatically maximised independently.

Conditions for successful deployment

Performance is site-specific and depends on matching the solar structure with local farming requirements.

  • Crop selection must reflect shade tolerance, temperature, rainfall and seasonal light requirements.
  • Panel density and height must balance electricity generation against crop sunlight and machinery access.
  • Higher structures, specialised foundations and farm-compatible electrical equipment can increase capital and maintenance costs.
  • Monitoring is required because excessive shading, altered rainfall patterns or unsuitable design can reduce agricultural productivity.
