A direct-ascent anti-satellite weapon is an interceptor launched from Earth to strike a satellite without first being placed in orbit. In its common kinetic form, it disables the target through a precisely timed high-speed collision rather than by remaining near it in space.
Interception sequence
The operation resembles missile interception, but the target follows a predictable orbital path at very high speed.
- Ground-based sensors determine the satellite's orbit and calculate a future intercept point.
- A rocket booster launches the interceptor from land, sea, or air onto a trajectory that crosses the target's path.
- Guidance updates and an onboard seeker steer the kill vehicle during its terminal approach.
- The interceptor is timed to collide with the satellite; it does not need to chase the satellite around an entire orbit.
How the satellite is disabled
In a hit-to-kill interception, the relative velocity of the two objects produces enough kinetic energy to rupture the satellite and destroy critical systems. The collision may break the satellite into numerous fragments even without an explosive warhead.
- Physical impact can destroy the satellite's power supply, communications equipment, sensors, payload, or attitude-control system.
- Loss of structural integrity or orientation can make the satellite immediately unusable.
- A destructive interception can generate orbital debris, which may threaten other spacecraft until atmospheric drag removes it; persistence generally increases with altitude.
Strategic and legal significance
Unlike a co-orbital weapon, a direct-ascent interceptor is not first deployed into an orbit near its target. The Outer Space Treaty, 1967 constrains military activities but does not comprehensively prohibit conventional direct-ascent anti-satellite weapons.
- Article IV prohibits placing nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit and restricts military activities on celestial bodies.
- Article IX requires due regard for other states' activities and consultations where an activity may cause potentially harmful interference.
- Debris-producing interceptions create risks for multiple space users, making verification, restraint, and debris mitigation central concerns of space governance.
