Dairy herd replacement is the planned substitution of animals leaving a dairy herd with selected young or newly acquired animals. It combines culling and selection so that herd size is maintained while low-performing stock is progressively replaced by healthier and genetically superior stock. Its purpose is to improve output and profitability over the productive life of the herd.

How replacement is planned

Planning links replacement decisions to production, reproduction, health and cost records rather than merely to an animal's age. The enterprise estimates likely exits, rears or procures suitable heifers and maintains the desired herd size and composition.

  • Animals with persistently poor yield, infertility, serious health problems or declining expected performance are considered for culling.
  • Replacement heifers are selected for genetic merit, health, growth and reproductive fitness.
  • Milk yield, calving, treatment, pedigree and feeding records make selection more objective.

Channels of productivity improvement

  • Replacing chronically unproductive animals raises average milk output and reproductive performance of the herd.
  • Selection of offspring from superior parents produces cumulative genetic improvement across generations.
  • Removal of animals that consume maintenance feed without adequate output improves the use of feed, labour, housing and capital.
  • A regular supply of replacements prevents sudden contraction of the milking herd after deaths, disease or compulsory culling.
  • Planned age and lactation composition supports steadier milk production and more predictable cash flow.

Economic balance

The optimal replacement rate is not the highest possible rate. Heifers require feed, labour and housing before producing milk, while premature culling sacrifices the remaining productive value of existing animals.

  • Too little replacement retains inefficient animals and slows genetic progress.
  • Excessive replacement raises rearing costs and increases the share of young, lower-lactation animals.
  • The decision should compare the expected future returns from retaining an animal with the full cost and expected performance of its replacement.
