Vultures are obligate scavengers: they obtain food mainly from dead animals rather than routinely hunting live prey. By rapidly locating and consuming carcasses, they provide a vital ecosystem service linking animal mortality with decomposition, nutrient flows and disease regulation.
Carcass removal and sanitation
Vultures can locate widely dispersed carrion and consume large quantities before prolonged decay. This rapid carcass removal reduces the time during which dead animals remain available as sources of contamination or contact.
- Their highly acidic digestive system inactivates many microbes ingested with carrion.
- Carcass consumption can reduce environmental exposure of livestock, wildlife and people to potentially harmful biological material.
