Ecological succession is the gradual change in species composition and community structure at a site over time. In secondary succession, pioneer species recolonize a disturbed area where soil, organic matter and often seeds, roots or microorganisms survive, making recovery faster than primary succession.
Starting the recovery process
Pioneer species are early colonizers adapted to disturbed, open conditions. In forests they may include rapidly growing herbs, grasses, shrubs and light-demanding trees that establish from surviving propagules or newly dispersed seeds.
- Their rapid growth creates vegetation cover, while roots bind the soil and reduce erosion and nutrient loss.
- They occupy exposed sites where strong sunlight, temperature fluctuations and moisture stress may prevent less tolerant species from establishing.
How pioneers facilitate later species
Pioneers act as ecosystem engineers by modifying harsh post-disturbance conditions. These changes can create a nurse effect, improving the establishment and survival of other plants.
- Leaf litter and dead roots add organic matter, rebuild humus and strengthen nutrient cycling.
- Vegetation cover moderates ground temperature, wind and evaporation, producing a more humid forest-floor microclimate.
- Some pioneer plants enrich nutrient-poor soil through nitrogen fixation, although this is not a trait of all pioneers.
- Shrubs and young trees provide shelter and perches for animals, which can increase seed dispersal into the recovering forest.
- Developing shade can suppress disturbance-adapted grasses and favour more shade-tolerant tree seedlings.
Transition towards a forest community
As soil and microclimatic conditions improve, longer-lived and more shade-tolerant species recruit beneath or among pioneers. These species may eventually replace early colonizers through competition for light and other resources, producing successive changes towards a more complex forest community.
- Succession is not perfectly linear because its pathway depends on disturbance severity, surviving biological legacies, seed sources, fire, grazing and subsequent human interference.
- Forest restoration can assist natural succession by protecting soil, seed banks and resprouting vegetation, and by using locally suitable native pioneer species where natural regeneration is inadequate.
