Ex-situ Conservation

Ex-situ conservation protects threatened wild animals outside their natural habitats under human care. It combines managed populations in facilities such as zoos and breeding centres with storage of genetic material through cryopreservation, primarily to prevent extinction and support future population recovery.
Methods used
Animals are maintained under controlled conditions that provide suitable enclosures, nutrition, veterinary care and opportunities for reproduction.
- Zoos, safari parks and specialised breeding centres maintain living populations for conservation breeding, research and public education.
- Gene banks preserve sperm, ova, embryos or tissues at very low temperatures for possible future use.
- Assisted reproductive methods, including artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilisation, may supplement natural breeding.
Conservation breeding process
Conservation breeding seeks to build a healthy captive population while retaining as much of the species' original genetic variation as practicable.
- Founders are identified and breeding pairs are selected through pedigree and genetic management to reduce inbreeding and unequal representation.
- Population records, health screening and veterinary management help control disease and maintain demographic stability.
- Where suitable habitat exists and the original threats have been addressed, animals may undergo reintroduction followed by monitoring in the wild.
Role and limitations
Ex-situ action can provide an insurance population when a species faces an immediate risk of extinction, but it complements rather than replaces in-situ conservation.
- Small captive populations may suffer inbreeding, loss of genetic diversity and adaptation to captivity.
- Captive breeding is costly and reintroduction may fail if habitat loss, hunting, invasive species or other original threats persist.
- It cannot by itself conserve the species' habitat, ecological interactions or natural evolutionary processes.
