India's Foreign Exchange Reserves
SyllabusIndian economy: mobilization of resources
India's foreign exchange reserves are official reserve assets available to meet external payment needs and maintain orderly conditions in the foreign exchange market. They are held and managed by the Reserve Bank of India, and the reported total comprises four major asset categories.
Four major components
- Foreign Currency Assets consist mainly of deposits and securities held in foreign currencies. They are reported in US dollar terms but are not necessarily all denominated in US dollars.
- Gold reserves refer to monetary gold held as an official reserve asset by the RBI.
- Special Drawing Rights holdings are international reserve assets created by the International Monetary Fund and allocated to its members.
- The Reserve Tranche Position in the IMF is India's liquid claim on the IMF that can be accessed subject to IMF rules.
How to read the reserve total
Although all four categories contribute to external liquidity, they differ in form: foreign currency claims, monetary gold, and IMF-related reserve assets.
- Changes in the dollar value of reserves can result from both actual transactions and valuation changes caused by movements in exchange rates or gold prices.
- Official reserves exclude private foreign-currency assets and should not be confused with foreign investment entering India.
- The two IMF-related components are SDR holdings and the reserve tranche position; they are distinct from foreign currency assets.
