Integrated Nutrient Management, or INM, means meeting crop nutrient needs through a planned combination of mineral fertilizers, organic materials and biological sources. It seeks to sustain soil fertility and crop productivity by balancing nutrient additions with crop requirements while protecting soil health. The appropriate combination varies with the soil, crop and local farming conditions.

Core components

INM integrates complementary nutrient sources rather than relying exclusively on any one source.

  • Soil testing and crop requirements guide the balanced application of major, secondary and micronutrients.
  • Mineral fertilizers provide nutrients in concentrated and readily available forms, with their rate, timing and placement adjusted to crop needs.
  • Farmyard manure, compost, green manure and crop residues recycle nutrients and add soil organic matter.
  • Legumes and biofertilizers, including nitrogen-fixing and phosphate-solubilising microorganisms, improve biological nutrient supply.
  • Soil amendments such as lime or gypsum may be used where soil acidity, alkalinity or related constraints reduce nutrient availability.

How it sustains soil fertility

INM manages both immediate crop nutrition and the soil's long-term capacity to supply nutrients.

  • Balanced replenishment helps prevent nutrient mining, deficiencies and harmful nutrient imbalances.
  • Organic inputs improve soil structure, biological activity, water-holding capacity and nutrient retention.
  • Combining nutrient sources can raise nutrient-use efficiency and reduce avoidable losses through leaching, runoff or volatilisation.
  • Recycling farm biomass and using biological processes can reduce excessive dependence on purchased fertilizers while sustaining yields.

Significance for agricultural policy

INM does not require abandoning chemical fertilizers. It promotes their judicious use alongside organic and biological inputs, making soil-health management more compatible with productivity, resource conservation and lower pollution risks.

  • Soil testing, locally appropriate recommendations and farmer awareness are essential because uniform fertilizer doses cannot address differences among soils and crops.
  • INM provides the agronomic basis for shifting policy emphasis from greater fertilizer consumption towards balanced fertilisation and efficient nutrient delivery.
