Bioaccumulation of Lead

Lead bioaccumulation is the gradual increase of lead in the body when repeated uptake exceeds elimination. Even small, continuing exposures can increase the total body burden because absorbed lead is redistributed into long-lived storage compartments, especially bone.

Entry and absorption

Lead enters mainly by ingestion of contaminated dust, soil, food or water, and by inhalation of lead-containing particles. The absorbed fraction depends on age, particle characteristics, nutrition and exposure route.

  • Children generally absorb and retain a larger fraction of ingested lead than adults, making them especially susceptible to chronic low-dose exposure.
  • After absorption, lead enters the bloodstream and is carried predominantly within red blood cells.

Distribution and long-term storage

Blood distributes lead to soft tissues such as the liver, kidneys, brain and bone marrow. Over time, much of the retained lead is transferred to the skeleton, where it becomes incorporated into the mineral matrix and can substitute for calcium.

  • Soft-tissue lead is more readily exchanged or eliminated, while lead stored in bone and teeth can persist for years.
  • A blood lead measurement mainly reflects recent exposure plus lead released from internal stores; it may not represent the entire accumulated burden.

Why low-level exposure accumulates

Repeated intake adds new lead before previously absorbed lead has been fully excreted. Slow removal from bone therefore creates a long-lived internal reservoir, even when each individual exposure is small.

  • Bone lead can return to blood during increased bone turnover, including pregnancy, lactation, ageing and osteoporosis.
  • Remobilized lead can expose the brain, kidneys and blood-forming system again without a new external dose.
  • Lead bioaccumulation concerns buildup within an organism; biomagnification refers to increasing concentrations across trophic levels.
