Military Logistics

SyllabusSecurity forces and agencies: mandate, modernisation and defence preparedness

Internal SecurityPublished 16 October 2026

Military logistics is the system that keeps armed forces supplied, equipped, mobile and medically supported during operations. It encompasses the planning and provision of personnel support, materiel, transport, facilities and services needed to sustain forces, linking available resources with operational requirements.

What military logistics provides

Logistics supports both personnel and equipment. Its scope extends beyond delivering supplies to keeping forces capable of continuing their missions.

  • Supply support provides ammunition, fuel, food, water, clothing, spare parts and other essential stores.
  • Movement and transport carry troops, equipment and supplies by land, sea or air to and within the area of operations.
  • Maintenance and recovery keep weapons, vehicles and other equipment serviceable through inspection, repair, replacement of components and recovery of damaged equipment.
  • Medical support includes treatment, casualty evacuation and the provision of medical supplies.
  • Infrastructure and services provide storage, accommodation, repair facilities and other support installations needed to sustain deployed forces.

How forces are sustained during operations

Logistics planning translates an operational plan into estimates of what forces will need, where they will need it and when it must arrive. It must account for the strength of the force, expected consumption, operational duration and available transport.

  • Stockholding and replenishment combine supplies held in advance with continuing deliveries as stocks are consumed.
  • A distribution network connects supply bases, depots and forward locations with the units using the supplies.
  • Logistics arrangements must adapt to terrain, weather, distance and enemy action, which can delay deliveries or disrupt routes.
  • Coordination among supply, transport, maintenance and medical organisations helps ensure that support reaches the force at the required time.

Why logistics determines operational effectiveness

Logistics influences operational reach and endurance: how far forces can operate and how long they can remain effective. A force's combat capability depends not only on possessing weapons but also on sustaining their use.

  • Joint logistics coordinates support across the Army, Navy and Air Force, allowing common resources and facilities to be used more efficiently.
  • Protecting supply routes and maintaining alternative arrangements reduce the risk that disruption will halt operations.
  • Logistics planning must balance efficiency with resilience, because the cheapest or shortest supply arrangement may not withstand operational disruption.
