Ocean heat uptake is the absorption and storage of heat by seawater. Because water has a high specific heat capacity and the ocean has enormous mass, it can store large amounts of energy while undergoing a relatively small temperature rise.

Physical basis of heat storage

The ocean acts as the Earth system's largest effective heat reservoir. Its large volume and the high heat capacity of water give it substantial thermal inertia, so its temperature changes more slowly than that of the atmosphere or land.

  • The upper ocean absorbs heat through exchanges of radiation, sensible heat and latent heat at the sea surface.
  • Winds and waves mix absorbed heat through the surface layer, while currents and ocean circulation redistribute it horizontally and into deeper waters.

How atmospheric warming is moderated

When greenhouse forcing creates an energy imbalance, much of the additional heat enters the ocean instead of immediately warming the air. This lowers the rate of surface atmospheric warming compared with a situation in which the same heat remained in the atmosphere.

  • Heat transfer into deeper layers spreads ocean warming over decades or longer, delaying the full surface-temperature response.
  • The ocean can later return some stored heat to the atmosphere, so heat uptake delays rather than prevents long-term warming.
  • Regional uptake differs with winds, currents, vertical mixing and ocean circulation, producing uneven patterns of atmospheric warming.

Limits and environmental consequences

As the ocean warms, stronger stratification can reduce vertical mixing and alter the rate at which heat reaches deeper layers. Continued uptake also causes thermal expansion, contributes to sea-level rise, intensifies marine heat stress and can reduce oxygen availability.
