Peak water is the stage at which the annual meltwater contribution from shrinking glaciers to a river basin reaches its maximum. It marks the transition from increasing to decreasing annual glacier runoff under sustained glacier mass loss, rather than the highest flood level or seasonal discharge peak in a river.
How peak water develops
Glacier retreat produces a characteristic but basin-specific sequence of runoff change.
- During the initial phase of warming, enhanced melting can increase runoff even while the glacier experiences negative mass balance.
- Eventually, the loss of glacier area and ice volume outweighs the higher melt rate; runoff then reaches peak water.
- After this point, continued shrinkage reduces the ice available for melting, causing the glacier-derived contribution to decline.
- The timing depends on factors such as glacier size, elevation, basin glacier cover, precipitation and the rate of warming.
How the concept should be interpreted
Peak water concerns the glacier-derived component of basin runoff, not necessarily total river discharge.
- Total flow also depends on rainfall, seasonal snowmelt, groundwater, evaporation, storage and human water use.
- Different glaciers and tributaries within the same basin may reach peak water at different times.
- Increasing runoff before the peak is not evidence of glacier recovery; it can indicate accelerated depletion of stored ice.
Hydrological significance
After peak water, the glacier's capacity to buffer river flow during warm or dry periods progressively weakens.
- Reduced meltwater can lower late-season flows, especially where glaciers contribute substantially during otherwise dry months.
- Consequences may include less reliable water supplies for ecosystems, irrigation, hydropower and settlements.
- The severity of impacts depends on the relative importance of glacier melt and whether rainfall, snowmelt or storage can compensate.
