River sedimentation is the settling and accumulation of sand, silt, clay and gravel carried by flowing water. When deposition exceeds removal, the river bed rises through aggradation, reducing the channel's effective cross-sectional area and its capacity to convey water within its banks.
How deposition occurs
A river deposits sediment when its velocity and transporting power decline. Deposition commonly increases where the channel gradient becomes gentler, flow spreads or encounters obstructions, or water enters a low-velocity reach.
- Heavy catchment erosion increases the sediment load reaching the river.
- Deforestation, construction, cultivation on vulnerable slopes and disturbed drainage can accelerate soil erosion and sediment delivery.
- Coarser material may form shoals and bars, while finer particles settle in quieter reaches.
How channel capacity is reduced
The discharge a channel can carry depends substantially on its flow area, shape, slope and resistance. Sediment deposited on the bed and margins occupies part of that space and can make the channel shallower or narrower.
- Bed aggradation reduces the channel's bankfull depth, so a smaller volume of water can pass without overtopping the banks.
- Bars and shoals constrict the effective flow section, divert currents and increase hydraulic resistance.
- For the same inflow, the water level therefore rises higher, and floodwater may spill onto the floodplain earlier.
- Repeated deposition can create a feedback in which slower, obstructed flow encourages further local sedimentation.
Environmental significance and response
Sedimentation is a natural fluvial process, but excessive accumulation can increase flood risk, obstruct drainage and alter aquatic habitats. Management should therefore address both the deposited material and its catchment sources.
- Watershed treatment, soil conservation and protection of riparian vegetation can reduce excessive sediment supply.
- Selective desilting may restore capacity in critical reaches, but indiscriminate removal can disturb channel stability and habitats.
- Floodplain protection and maintaining natural drainage complement sediment management because channel capacity alone cannot eliminate floods.
