A river floodplain is the low-lying land beside a river that is periodically inundated when water exceeds the channel. Within an urban region, it functions as a hydrologically connected ecological buffer that stores water, supports biodiversity and regulates environmental processes.

Hydrological regulation

By retaining space for the river to spread, a floodplain acts as a natural component of the urban drainage system.

• Temporary inundation provides floodwater storage, which can delay runoff and reduce the downstream flood peak.
• Infiltration through floodplain soils supports groundwater recharge where local soil and aquifer conditions permit.
• Exchange between the river, wetlands and groundwater helps maintain the wider urban water cycle.

Ecological and water-quality functions

Floodplains form the transition between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, so their value extends beyond flood control.

• Riparian vegetation and floodplain wetlands provide habitat and movement corridors for aquatic and terrestrial species.
• Periodic flooding deposits sediment and redistributes organic matter, supporting nutrient cycling and soil formation.
• Vegetation, soils and microorganisms trap sediment and transform some nutrients and contaminants, thereby improving water quality, although this capacity is limited.
• Floodplain vegetation and water surfaces support local cooling through shade and evapotranspiration, moderating the urban microclimate.

Importance for urban resilience

A functioning floodplain is therefore blue-green infrastructure, not vacant land awaiting construction.

• Maintaining lateral connectivity between a river and its floodplain preserves storage, habitat and sediment exchange.
• Encroachment, channel constriction and impervious surfaces reduce infiltration and storage, transferring or intensifying flood risk.
• Protection and restoration should retain floodplain wetlands, native riparian vegetation, natural drainage paths and permeable open space.
