Flood Dynamics of the Brahmaputra Valley

The Assam Valley is naturally flood-prone because the Brahmaputra carries very large seasonal flows through a low-gradient alluvial plain after descending from steep, high-rainfall mountains. Concentrated monsoon runoff, abundant sediment and an unstable braided channel continually alter the river’s capacity and course, causing overbank flooding, bank erosion and prolonged inundation. These factors reinforce one another, making floods an intrinsic feature of the valley’s fluvial system.

Physiographic setting

  • The Assam Valley is a low-gradient alluvial plain enclosed by the Himalayas to the north and hills of the northeast and the Meghalaya Plateau to the south.
  • The Brahmaputra and numerous tributaries collect runoff from steep mountain catchments and concentrate it within this elongated valley.
  • When mountain rivers enter the plains, their gradient and velocity decline sharply, encouraging sediment deposition and lateral spreading of water.
  • Extensive low-lying floodplains, wetlands and abandoned channels provide natural space for overflow but are consequently liable to recurrent inundation.

Monsoonal concentration of discharge

  • A large share of the basin’s rainfall is concentrated in the southwest monsoon season, producing a rapid seasonal rise in river discharge.
  • Orographic uplift generates heavy rainfall over the Himalayan foothills and the surrounding northeastern hills, which feed tributaries on both banks of the Brahmaputra.
  • Intense or prolonged rainfall saturates catchments and increases surface runoff, reducing the lag between rainfall and tributary response.
  • When flood peaks from major tributaries coincide with a high stage in the main river, water levels rise rapidly and tributary drainage may be impeded by backwater effects.
  • Snow and glacier melt from the upper basin supplements warm-season flow, adding to the volume already generated by monsoon rainfall.

High sediment load and loss of conveyance

  • Steep slopes, intense rainfall, landslides and erosion in the geologically young Himalayan catchment supply large quantities of sediment.
  • The decline in river gradient within the Assam plains causes part of this sediment to be deposited in the channel.
  • Deposition forms sandbars and mid-channel islands and can locally raise the riverbed or obstruct individual channels.
  • Local aggradation reduces channel conveyance, so a given high discharge is more likely to spill across the floodplain.
  • Bank erosion contributes additional sediment and repeatedly reshapes channel margins.

Braided and shifting channel

The Brahmaputra adjusts to fluctuating discharge and sediment supply through repeated erosion, deposition and redistribution of flow among multiple channels.

  • The river has a wide, braided channel composed of several interlacing channels separated by mobile sediment bars.
  • Bars divert flow towards riverbanks, promoting bank erosion and rapid lateral channel migration.
  • Channels may be abandoned, reopened or redirected during high flows, making the location of erosion and inundation difficult to predict.
  • A high stage in the Brahmaputra can obstruct the discharge of tributaries and local drainage channels, producing drainage congestion away from the main bank.
  • The interaction of large monsoon flows with a sediment-choked, mobile channel makes flooding recurrent and spatially variable across the valley.
