Climate-resilient agriculture enables farms to sustain livelihoods and production despite droughts, floods, heat, salinity, soil degradation and changing pest pressures. It builds adaptive capacity by combining location-specific crops, natural-resource management, technology and institutions, while pursuing mitigation co-benefits where feasible.

Risk-aware and location-specific planning

Resilience begins with understanding local climate hazards, farm resources and the vulnerability of crops, livestock and households. There is no single universal package: practices must suit the local agro-climatic zone and production system.

  • Crop and varietal choice should match rainfall, temperature, soil, water availability and the growing season.
  • Weather forecasts, agro-advisories and contingency crop plans support timely decisions on sowing, irrigation and harvesting.
  • Preparedness should address both gradual stresses and extreme events through risk management, rather than relying only on post-disaster relief.

Diversity and resource conservation

A resilient farm avoids dependence on one crop or resource and maintains the ecological base on which production depends.

  • Crop diversification, intercropping, rotations and integrated crop-livestock systems spread climatic and income risks.
  • Drought, flood, heat and salinity-tolerant varieties reduce sensitivity to specific stresses, while short-duration varieties can help fit altered growing periods.
  • Soil organic matter, mulching, balanced nutrient management and reduced erosion improve soil health and moisture retention.
  • Rainwater harvesting, watershed development and efficient irrigation increase water security and productivity per unit of water.
  • Agroforestry and integrated farming can diversify outputs, moderate microclimates and recycle farm resources.

Livelihood and institutional resilience

Farm resilience depends not only on field practices but also on farmers' capacity to anticipate shocks, access technology and recover without losing productive assets.

  • Quality seed systems, extension, credit, storage, markets and crop insurance enable adoption and recovery.
  • Collective institutions can improve access to machinery, water management, information and markets, especially for smallholders.
  • Energy efficiency, precise input use and better residue and livestock management can lower emissions or increase carbon storage without compromising adaptation and food security.
  • Continuous monitoring and farmer participation allow practices to be revised as climatic and ecological conditions change.
