The coal logistics chain is the sequence through which coal moves from a mine or import terminal to a thermal power plant's boiler bunkers. Fuel availability depends not merely on total coal production, but on the timely coordination of mining, evacuation, transport, unloading, storage and internal handling.
From source to power plant
Coal reaches a plant through linked stages, and disruption at any stage can reduce actual receipts even when adequate coal exists elsewhere.
- At the source, mine production, coal preparation, grade conformity and first-mile connectivity determine how much coal is ready for dispatch.
- Coal is moved through railways, roads, merry-go-round systems, conveyors and, where feasible, coastal shipping or inland waterways; rail transport is especially important for distant plants.
- At the destination, siding capacity, rake unloading, stockyard management and conveyor systems determine whether received coal reaches the boiler bunkers without delay.
How logistics determines availability
A plant's operational stock broadly reflects opening stock plus receipts minus consumption. Thus, fuel security depends on the rate and reliability of replenishment relative to daily burn, not simply on annual coal allocation.
- Mine-level shortages, delayed loading, inadequate rakes, congested routes or wagon detention can interrupt the flow of coal.
- A mismatch between dispatch schedules and a plant's consumption can deplete stocks despite adequate aggregate production.
- Coal quality, excessive moisture and handling losses can reduce the usable energy obtained from the quantity delivered.
- Pithead plants generally face shorter transport chains, while distant plants are more exposed to route congestion and transit delays.
Building resilience
Adequate plant-level inventory provides a buffer against temporary disruptions, but excessive stocks raise carrying and handling costs. Reliable availability therefore requires coordinated production and dispatch planning among coal suppliers, transport agencies and generators.
- Mechanised loading and unloading, dedicated sidings and improved first-mile links reduce turnaround time.
- Route diversification and multimodal transport reduce dependence on a single corridor or mode.
- Digital tracking of dispatches, rakes, transit and plant stocks supports early corrective action.
- Better demand forecasting aligns coal supplies with seasonal and plant-specific generation requirements.
