Classification of Crude Oil Grades

Crude oils differ mainly in density and sulfur content, which affect their transport, refining and value. “Heavy” and “light” describe density, usually expressed through API gravity; “sour” and “sweet” describe sulfur content. Thus, weight and sourness are separate characteristics, although heavy crudes are often sour.
Physical and chemical distinction
A light crude has lower density and therefore a higher API gravity, while a heavy crude has higher density and a lower API gravity. Sweet crude contains relatively little sulfur, whereas sour crude contains more sulfur; exact commercial classification thresholds can vary across markets and crude streams.
- Light sweet crude is less dense, flows more readily and contains comparatively little sulfur.
- Heavy sour crude is denser, is generally more viscous and contains comparatively more sulfur.
- API gravity is inversely related to density: a higher API gravity indicates a lighter crude.
Differences in refining
Light sweet crude generally produces a larger proportion of lighter fractions such as petrol, naphtha and middle distillates through relatively simpler processing. Heavy sour crude contains more heavy residual material and requires greater upgrading and sulfur removal.
- Heavy crude may require coking or hydrocracking to convert large molecules into lighter products.
- Sour crude requires hydrotreating and related processes to remove sulfur and meet fuel-quality requirements.
- Processing heavy sour crude generally needs more complex equipment, hydrogen and energy than processing light sweet crude.
Commercial and strategic significance
Light sweet crude normally commands a premium because it is easier to refine into high-value fuels. Heavy sour crude is commonly discounted, but sophisticated refineries equipped with conversion and desulfurisation units can process it profitably.
- A refinery cannot substitute every crude grade freely because its equipment is designed for a particular range of crude qualities.
- For importing countries such as India, refinery configuration influences supplier choice, import diversification and the economics of changing crude sources.
