Dedicated Freight Corridors

A dedicated freight corridor is a railway route designed primarily for goods trains, separate from the conventional network that carries both passenger and freight services. By segregating traffic with different speeds and operating patterns, it releases scarce train paths and improves the effective capacity of the mixed-traffic network.

Why mixed traffic creates capacity constraints

Railway capacity depends not only on the number of tracks, but also on how uniformly trains use them. Fast passenger trains, stopping services and slower freight trains require different speeds and schedules, creating operational conflicts.

  • Overtaking and crossing movements occupy additional train paths and increase waiting time.
  • Passenger services generally receive scheduling priority, causing freight trains to be detained or routed around busy periods.
  • Differences in speed and stopping patterns reduce line capacity compared with a route carrying trains of broadly similar performance.

How dedicated corridors release capacity

Moving substantial freight traffic to a separate corridor creates more homogeneous operations on both networks. The conventional lines gain room for passenger services, while the corridor can be optimised for freight.

  • Traffic segregation reduces conflicts between fast passenger trains and slower freight trains.
  • Freed paths on existing routes permit additional passenger trains, improved punctuality and more maintenance blocks.
  • Freight corridors can accommodate longer and heavier trains, higher axle loads and freight-oriented signalling, raising carrying capacity per train.
  • Predictable scheduling improves wagon and locomotive utilisation and shortens freight transit time.

Network-wide gains and limitations

India implements the programme through the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited, under the Ministry of Railways, with the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors forming its principal corridors.

  • Corridors can lower logistics costs and make rail more competitive for long-haul bulk and container traffic.
  • Their full benefit depends on efficient feeder routes, terminals, last-mile links and timely transfer of traffic from congested trunk routes.
  • Capacity can remain constrained at junctions and approaches where dedicated and conventional networks interact.
