Railway Multitracking

Railway multitracking means adding one or more parallel main-line tracks to an existing railway corridor, such as through doubling, tripling or quadrupling. It raises line capacity, the number of trains or volume of traffic that a corridor can carry safely within a given period, by creating additional paths for train movement.
How additional tracks create capacity
On a single track, trains moving in opposite directions must wait at crossing stations. A second track permits largely direction-wise movement, reducing these waits and allowing more trains to pass through the corridor.
- A third or fourth track provides additional train paths, enabling simultaneous movement of more services.
- Separate tracks can be assigned to fast passenger trains, stopping services or freight trains, reducing delays caused by differences in speed.
- More opportunities for overtaking reduce the time for which a slower train blocks a faster one.
- During maintenance or disruption, traffic can use another track, improving reliability and preserving usable capacity.
Why the gain may exceed simple track addition
Multitracking reduces operational conflicts at crossings, junctions and overtaking points. Better segregation makes train movements more regular, so available slots can be used more efficiently and average speeds may improve.
- Higher reliability reduces cascading delays, in which one late train disrupts several following trains.
- Additional capacity can accommodate more passenger services, more freight trains or a chosen combination of both.
- Freight throughput rises when additional train paths are combined with longer or heavier trains, although these measures are distinct from multitracking.
Limits and complementary measures
Corridor capacity is determined by its weakest bottleneck. Added tracks deliver their full benefit only when station yards, junctions, bridges, terminals and signalling can handle the increased flow.
- Modern signalling can reduce the safe interval between successive trains and complement additional tracks.
- Yard remodelling and grade-separated junctions may be needed to prevent conflicting movements.
- Terminal and loading capacity must expand if additional line capacity is to translate into higher end-to-end traffic.
