IndiaAI Mission

The IndiaAI Mission is a national programme to build an inclusive and responsible artificial intelligence ecosystem in India. Approved in 2024, it seeks to expand computing, data, talent, research and finance while promoting safe and socially beneficial AI.

Overarching objectives

The Mission aims to democratise access to AI infrastructure, strengthen India's technological capabilities and enable AI-based solutions for public and economic needs. It has an approved outlay of Rs 10,371.92 crore for five years and is implemented through the Digital India Corporation under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Seven operational objectives

The Mission translates its goals into seven pillars covering the main requirements of an AI ecosystem.

• IndiaAI Compute Capacity seeks to provide access to more than 10,000 GPUs through a public-private partnership model.
• IndiaAI Innovation Centre supports indigenous large multimodal models and domain-specific foundational models.
• IndiaAI Datasets Platform facilitates access to quality non-personal datasets for AI research and innovation.
• IndiaAI Application Development Initiative promotes scalable AI solutions for problem statements identified by government bodies and critical sectors.
• IndiaAI FutureSkills expands AI education and establishes data and AI laboratories beyond major metropolitan centres.
• IndiaAI Startup Financing provides streamlined funding support to deep-tech AI startups.
• Safe and Trusted AI supports indigenous tools, frameworks and guidelines concerning issues such as explainability, privacy, bias and responsible governance.

Intended outcomes

Together, these measures seek to improve India's global AI competitiveness, widen access to innovation and encourage socially inclusive applications. The Mission combines ecosystem-building with responsible AI, rather than treating AI governance only as statutory regulation.
