India Semiconductor Mission

The India Semiconductor Mission is a Government of India initiative to build a sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem in the country. Its central purpose is to make India a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design by strengthening domestic capabilities across the semiconductor value chain.

Strategic objectives

The Mission seeks to reduce structural dependence on external supply chains while integrating India with global semiconductor networks.

• It formulates a long-term strategy for developing semiconductor fabrication, display manufacturing and chip-design capabilities in India.
• It promotes trusted and resilient supply chains covering materials, equipment, technologies, foundry services and logistics.
• It seeks to harness economies of scale and improve India's competitiveness as a location for semiconductor investment and production.

Technology and design capabilities

The Mission treats design, intellectual property and research as essential complements to manufacturing.

• It supports the growth of the Indian semiconductor design industry through access to electronic design automation tools, foundry services and related facilities.
• It promotes indigenous intellectual property, technology transfer and the commercialisation of research.
• It encourages collaboration among industry, research institutions and national and international organisations for advanced research and skill development.

Building the wider ecosystem

The Mission coordinates government support for semiconductor and display facilities and acts as the nodal institution for the relevant schemes.

• It seeks to attract investment for fabrication facilities and other parts of the semiconductor value chain.
• It supports start-ups and MSMEs working in semiconductor design and related innovation.
• It aims to create an ecosystem in which manufacturing, design, research, skills and supply-chain infrastructure develop together.
