Landscape-level conservation manages wildlife, habitats, ecological processes and human land uses across an entire ecological landscape rather than treating protected areas as isolated islands. It links habitat cores through buffer zones, wildlife corridors and multiple-use areas, while integrating conservation with livelihoods, infrastructure planning and conflict mitigation.
Why ecological connectivity matters
Protected areas are essential habitat cores, but animals move beyond them for food, water, breeding and dispersal. Farms, settlements and linear infrastructure can isolate populations, obstruct movement and funnel wildlife through human-used areas; administrative boundaries rarely match the ranges of wide-ranging species such as elephants and tigers.
- Wildlife corridors maintain movement between habitat patches and reduce population isolation.
- Broken movement routes can increase encounters among wildlife, people, livestock and property outside protected areas.
Why mountain systems require a landscape approach
Mountain ecosystems are connected across slopes, valleys, river catchments and elevational zones. Species may use different elevations or habitats as seasons and climatic conditions change, while land-use change upstream can affect water, soil and habitats downstream. Conservation confined to isolated sites therefore cannot maintain ecological connectivity or landscape-scale processes.
- Mapping corridors, bottlenecks, degraded links and conflict hotspots enables coordinated planning across administrative jurisdictions.
- Protecting and restoring habitat links allows species movement, including shifts towards suitable climatic conditions.
- Careful infrastructure alignment, wildlife crossings and speed regulation reduce obstruction and collisions caused by roads and railways.
- Development planning must consider cumulative impacts across connected slopes and catchments, not merely impacts at individual project sites.
Conflict mitigation and cooperative governance
Asian elephants require extensive, connected habitats to meet changing food and water needs and to disperse. Broken corridors can channel elephants into farms and settlements, so conservation must combine connectivity with measures that protect people and livelihoods.
- Forest, agriculture, transport, power and local authorities must coordinate decisions across the landscape.
- Early-warning systems, rapid-response teams and timely compensation can reduce losses, fear and retaliatory killing.
- Managing waste, carcasses, crops and other attractants can discourage repeated wildlife entry; context-specific barriers can prevent dangerous entry without indiscriminately fragmenting habitat.
- Local communities should participate in planning, monitoring and preventive measures, supported by long-term adaptive management.
