A wildlife corridor is an area of suitable habitat that connects otherwise separated habitat patches and permits animals to move between them. In fragmented landscapes, it maintains ecological connectivity, especially for wide-ranging species whose feeding, breeding and dispersal needs extend beyond individual protected areas.
Functions in fragmented landscapes
- Corridors enable dispersal and routine movement between feeding, breeding, resting and refuge areas, allowing animals to use resources distributed across a large landscape.
- They maintain gene flow between populations, reducing genetic isolation and the risk of inbreeding in small, separated populations.
- They support recolonisation of habitat patches after local extinction and permit a demographic rescue effect, as immigrants can supplement declining populations.
- They facilitate seasonal migration and movement in response to drought, fire, prey availability and long-term environmental change.
Contribution to population persistence
By linking habitat patches, corridors can convert isolated populations into a functionally connected metapopulation. This spreads ecological risk across the landscape and improves the likelihood that wide-ranging species can maintain viable populations despite local disturbances.
- Connectivity allows juveniles and other dispersing individuals to establish new territories, thereby maintaining population exchange.
- Corridors can preserve ecological interactions such as predation, herbivory and seed dispersal by enabling mobile species to perform their roles across multiple habitat patches.
Conditions for effectiveness
A mapped strip becomes functional only when its habitat quality, width and continuity suit the target species. Effective corridors require protection of critical bottlenecks, compatible land uses and safe passage across roads, railways, canals and settlements.
- Degraded or highly disturbed corridors may expose animals to mortality, edge effects and human-wildlife conflict.
- Corridor design must be species-specific because movement behaviour, habitat preference and tolerance of human activity differ among species.
