SyllabusConservation: groundwater over-exploitation

EconomyPublished 20 August 2026

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan, or PM-KUSUM, is an MNRE scheme that promotes solar energy in agriculture. It combines decentralized renewable-power generation with solar irrigation to reduce dependence on diesel and conventional grid electricity while creating opportunities for farmers to produce energy.

Component A: Decentralized renewable-energy plants

Component A provides for 10,000 MW of decentralized, grid-connected solar or other renewable-energy plants on farmers' land. Each plant may have capacity up to 2 MW, and the electricity generated is supplied to the local distribution company.

Component B: Stand-alone solar pumps

Component B supports installation of 14 lakh stand-alone solar agricultural pumps, mainly in off-grid areas and as replacements for diesel pumps. Financial assistance is generally available for pumps up to 7.5 HP, with support for larger pumps limited to the eligible capacity.

Component C: Solarisation of grid-connected pumps

Component C covers solarisation of 35 lakh grid-connected agricultural pumps through individual pump solarisation or feeder-level solarisation. Individual systems can meet irrigation needs and permit surplus electricity to be supplied to the grid, while feeder-level projects solarise an entire agricultural feeder.
