Radio-Frequency Jamming

Radio-frequency jamming is the deliberate transmission of interfering radio energy to prevent a receiver from obtaining a usable signal. Against a UAV, it targets the command-and-control link between the remote operator or ground station and the aircraft, rather than physically destroying the UAV.
How the command link is disrupted
The jammer transmits energy on, or sufficiently near, the frequency used by the UAV's command receiver. This raises the receiver's noise and interference level, reducing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio until legitimate control signals can no longer be reliably detected, demodulated or decoded.
- A spot jammer concentrates power on a known channel, while a barrage jammer covers a wider frequency band at the cost of lower power on each frequency.
- Directional antennas can focus jamming energy towards the UAV, improving effectiveness while reducing unwanted interference elsewhere.
- The command uplink may be denied even if the UAV's onboard flight controller and pre-programmed navigation remain functional.
Operational consequences
Loss of the command link does not produce one universal result. The UAV follows its programmed lost-link procedure, which may direct it to hover, land, return to a stored location or continue an autonomous route.
- Jamming the command link may also prevent the operator from changing the mission or issuing a termination command.
- Disruption of the telemetry or video downlink can deny situational awareness without necessarily removing the UAV's ability to fly.
- Jamming causes denial through interference, whereas spoofing attempts to make the receiver accept a false but apparently valid signal.
Factors governing effectiveness
Effectiveness depends on jammer power, distance, antenna direction, terrain, the legitimate transmitter's strength and the UAV receiver's resilience. Frequency hopping, spread-spectrum techniques, strong encryption and interference-resistant waveforms can make detection or disruption harder, although encryption alone does not prevent radio interference.
- A largely autonomous UAV may complete its task despite losing the command link.
- Indiscriminate jamming can disrupt legitimate radio services, making controlled frequency selection and directionality important in border-security operations.
