Rainfall-Induced Slope Failure

A rainfall-induced slope failure occurs when infiltrating rainwater weakens a soil or weathered-rock mass until gravity overcomes its resistance to movement. Rainfall mainly destabilizes a slope by increasing pore-water pressure, reducing frictional resistance and sometimes increasing the weight of the slope material. Failure may then occur as a slide, debris flow or other form of mass movement.

How rainfall removes slope stability

Rainwater enters pores, joints and cracks, progressively replacing air and reducing soil suction. As water pressure rises, the stress pressing grains together falls according to effective stress: σ' = σ - u, where u is pore-water pressure. The available shear strength, commonly expressed as τ = c' + σ' tan φ', therefore declines.

  • Saturation adds water weight, increasing the downslope gravitational force acting on the slope mass.
  • Seepage produces hydraulic forces within the slope and may create perched water above a less-permeable layer.
  • Surface runoff can erode or undercut the slope toe, removing support from the material above.
  • Failure begins when driving forces exceed resisting forces, conventionally represented by a factor of safety below 1.

Why rainfall duration and intensity matter

The triggering pathway depends on rainfall delivery, infiltration capacity, subsurface drainage and the slope's initial moisture condition. Antecedent rainfall leaves less storage available and brings groundwater closer to a critical level.

  • Prolonged rainfall can recharge deeper groundwater and sustain high pore pressure along pre-existing weak layers, favouring deeper failures.
  • Intense rainfall can rapidly saturate shallow soil, especially through cracks and preferential pathways, causing shallow slides that may transform into debris flows.
  • Weak, highly weathered or fractured material, steep relief, poor drainage and toe cutting reduce the rainfall needed to trigger failure.
  • Rainfall thresholds are site-specific because permeability, soil depth, vegetation, slope geometry and geological structure differ between slopes.
